The Birth Story
Wow, can it be true?? A one year old hardly sounds like a baby anymore! In fact, it's more on the toddler-side of babyhood, isnt' it? But not my baby! He's still very much my baby! He might be turning one today, but he's definitely still my baby! :) One year ago today, my sister, kids, hubby and I all went in for an appointment. She said I was 4cm (?) dilated and tried to strip the membranes. We left and then later met my mom for lunch at a super yummy place called Sunrise Bagels. While there I started to feel contractions, about 15 minutes apart I think. The rest of the afternoon the contractions continued. My sister picked the girls up from school. We went for a walk, and the contractions became closer together, about 5-6 minutes. We called the midwife, she said come in. I started getting so nervous! My mom came to our house when she got off work, and we were at the hospital by about 5:30pm. Unfortunately the nurse who checked me in was about to go off shift, so she did not feel particularly compassionate and said they might just send me back home. Those were not happy moments there with that nurse. I was at 5cm and she told me to go walk the halls. So we walked the halls, contractions 3 minutes apart, and thankfully the angelic, wonderful midwife appeared after a while and let me go back to the room. I was at 6cm by then I think. Then the wonderful, angelic midwife said the magical words, "Ok, you can have your epidural now." (Picture a bright light from heaven, angels singing "halelujah".) This was to be my first epidural ever. And it was glorious. I didn't feel any more contractions. I sat in quiet with the tv on, not really watching it, as I was too nervous. My mom called my sister and asked if she could come up, since the granddaughters were all sleeping at their house. She came by about 10:30pm I think. By then I could start to feel the pain of the baby coming through, although glory halelujah I still could not feel those awful contractions. Daniel Isaac was born at 11:02pm. It was a wonderful moment. We were all crying. The midwife lay him on my chest and I was the first to see it was a boy (the ultrasound at 5mos. didnt' show for sure, so there had been doubts). And what a beautiful boy! Hard to believe a year has already gone by. Happy Birthday, Daniel!
