I just finished reading to the girls their first "big girl" book with almost no pictures...the Secret Garden. Granted, it was a condensed version, but still! Big steps for them to sit and listen and use their imagination while listening! And today, after some research and one wasted trip to a poorly stocked Blockbuster, I finally found a copy of the 1993 version and we watched it together for our weekly tradition of "Movie Night." I wish you all could've seen the sheer delight on Rebekah's face as she watched. And she was also very kind to mention and question all the differences between the book and the movie! ("Mommy! Why does the daddy have girl hair? It didn't say the daddy had girl hair!!...??") Anyways, it was a blast, especially for a cold and rainy day. Now I'm going to decide on another (there are so many) good book to read to follow up with a movie...(Yay, earning mom points! I want to do this kind of thing all the time but don't usually get to it...constantly striving to do better...)

Sounds like a lot of fun :) Caleb really enjoyed the Narnia series and I think they do have old movies to go with the books too.
how FUN!
i'd like to read "the little princess" some day, but i'm waiting for the kids to get older.
may i recommend: In Grandma's Attic by Arleta Richardson loved that book! a great one to read w/little girls. no movie to go with it, though.
i'd also like to read Little House on the prarie.
oh! and another FUN one that we're reading right now: Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.
and of course, i agree w/Glenna's Narnia series. esp. since they're making those movies right now (although i don't think the movies do it justice) !
Yeah, and I have to be sure the movies aren't too scary for the girls. My dad read us Narnia and the Rings series when we were young, but we were school age and better able to understand. Those are fond memories! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll choose one of those most likely! This was a condensed version for younger girls so I might look for the same kind of thing....?
i was (and still am) a HUGE fan of the Little House series. i read the whole series (9 books total) like five times through when i was in elementary school. looooooooooooooooooooved them. cool side-note here. Eric's mom grew up in missouri, and when she was about 5 years old, her friend's mom took she and her friend to this sweet old lady's house, who lived about an hour away, for cookies. turns out, IT WAS LAURA INGALLS WILDER!!!! Eric's mom had cookies AT LAURA INGALLS WILDER'S KITCHEN TABLE!!! she told me that story last Christmas - i was so excited. :) so i vote for those. :)
i also know what you mean about "mom points" and constantly striving to do better...totally know what you mean. hmmm, gives me an idea for a blog actually. :)
wow! so cool, heather
Wow! That is totally cool about LIW and cookies and all that! Unbelievable..
I think I will do those books next! I could try to find the tv series to rent maybe after each book is done...or who knows...
SO GLAD somebody else can relate to me about earning Mom Points! Most days I feel so horrid at the end of the day...having spent the whole day running around, getting things done for the home and the family, only to ignore the little munchkins. Every morning in my quiet time I beg God to make me a better wife and mom...
My mom was amazing - I dont see how she did it. She taught us how to read, taught us Bible songs and verses during the preschool years, all the while on the mission field. She always thought of fun things to do and fun places to take us (usually free!).
I hope to do better...it's a daily thing...
